Paris with a Rolleiflex 3.5f TLR
Trying the travel photography challenge (only take one camera) with a Rolleiflex TLR, what could possibly go wrong? Alastair has some good revelations on this trip when he elects to leave all digital cameras and other lens options behind. Airport CT scanners are a real concern (and problem) for film but ultimately some great images are realized.

Paris trip - Fogged film!
Просмотров 4234 месяца назад
The one camera, one lens challenge is tough enough, so choosing a film camera adds another dimension. Particularly when a problem with the film arises. In this video Alastair takes his trusty Rolleiflex to Paris and one of the infinite film variables becomes an issue.

You won't find peas, and based on the age of many of the rolls of film, it would be bad if it were peas. Such a strange and diverse collection of film rolls and sheets spanning from the mid-90s to pretty current. While expired film is losing its appeal, its clear that no matter how much he swears he's done with the variability of old film due to all the other chaotic factors involved in shootin...
Going mirrorless with the Nikon Z8 - the good and the bad
Просмотров 5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Moving over to Nikon mirrorless from the DSLR world has not been easy for Alastair. The Z8 offers many improvements over his D500 and D810 combo, however, there are also some significant challenges that he's having. Is it worth it? Yes, of course, but thats hardly the point. Complaining about the numerous shortcomings is way easier. And yes he's read through the insanely long manual. All 948 pa...

    To this day I still own: From Nikon a d500, d7100, d810, d700, z6ii From Fuji XT1,XT4, XE1-full spectrum, x100s, x100v From sony an A7iii. and a leica Q. Plus a whole host of 35mm film cameras. My most used camera, which has been used to take my favourite images, and is my favourite camera to shoot with is the D500. I'd say about 50% of the time this is the camera I'm using. Given the amount of cameras I needlessly own, the D500 is very over represented. I'd never sell it. Its the only digital camera I have with a sentimental attachment.

    For once, I could be one of the annoying guys going "I got it for a fraction of that price", and I'd be correct, but I know I was just darn lucky. I have had several stories similar to yours (I think the worst case was my Rolleiflex Automat, which now finally works like a dream). But for once I got lucky and it's my first F2, with the oldest type of light meter (I've been told these rarely work properly anymore, seller just told me that it does react to light). It exposed all my photos correctly, on slide film no less! Wohoo!

    I’m sorry but these aren’t problems with the Z8, all these problems could be avoided if you did your research before buying the camera and it’s pretty obvious that you didn’t do your due diligence before going to your shoot 💀.. sorry mate but I think you might have to rename your video tittle

      I didn’t show up to that shoot with only one camera. I’m dumb, but not that dumb. Watch the next video on the z8. Lots of (in my mind) legitimate issues with the camera. I’m used to it, but it’s by no means perfect.

    There are many super fast medium and large format lenses even at f/1.4 for 4x5. Just not many people know them, doesn’t mean f/2 is something of this world . I own 1.6 for 6x7. Just an example. 110mm f/2 on GF is boring, I feel gfx is a camera where you should adapt medium format lenses . Also forget about FF lenses for gfx , they all have weird bokeh and bad corners/dark corners , and sharp-unsharp - sharp effect (when bokeh switches from bokeh to sharp at the corners like on voigtlander 58mm 1.4 , canon 58 1.2 , canon 50mm 1.8 /1.4..)

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird 3 дня назад

      Really? Which lenses are that fast? The fastest large-format lens I have is the 150 f2.8 Xenotar. The fastest medium format lens I have is the Mamiya 80mm f1.9, but I’m not sure it would cover 6x7. Thanks for the comments. Always looking for interesting lenses to make the digital cameras a little less clinical.

    Shouldn't be from the back as they are small felting pieces (~2mm thickness); my guess is this is a baffle off the mirror frame aka what is used to damper impact, hence vibration on the mirror stop at the ground glass , this also stops light leaks.

    I have two of the exact same GE made light meters .. I found one very cheap on ebay that had its original leather pouch.. I bought it because it looked in better shape and had the case.. When I got it the cell some how was putting out MORE power then it should have .. You would think over the years it would get weaker but it was pushing the needle further then it should have by quite a bit.. Thus the end readings would be underexposed .. The one I had that was beat up some was quite close and I could get used to using it without much issues.. I just swapped the top sections and as the model I have you can pull the top half off for really dark areas , Flip a door open for medium light area or close the door for bright areas all three. Well the top half was much nicer on the one I got really cheap so I ended up using it and the leather pouch lol. But I was shocked at how much different the two where from each other.

    hits and misses. The original idea of one lens, one Rolleiflex, one film was from someone else. Perhaps it should be attributed to @Peter Bongard www.youtube.com/@pbfotografiert who did it 6 years ago.

    Sover is a shark. He capitalizes on the sentimentalists and takes advantage wherever he can. His servicing costs are a good example of this. They aren't fixed, yet he advertises as such. Once he has your camera he continues to find "issues" and bilk until your repair bill is twice as high as expected. The F2 was made to be easily serviced by most technicians. They are not rocket science. You'd been wiser to find a cheap F2 in good condition and put a few rolls through it. In all likelihood the camera would have worked properly, as their reputation suggests, not a lot goes wrong with them. For curiosity sake, I contacted him looking for an F2. He tried to sell me a beaten up F2 / DP1 (I laughed when he rated it at a 9.5) for close to 1800CAD. He's taking people for a ride.

    Alastair, fyi, to get lightroom to see the fff or 3F file types, you do the dng conversion in Flexcolor software (free), then it's straight TIFF , tiff or Dng that most software can handle, or for modern Hassy's [X1D/X2D and H6D] you have to use phocus directly, as the f formats are legacy, but they revised the packaging so you must use phocus to decrypt it. ( from memory the Phase One, Capture One software IS also agnostic enough to take it, it can deal with most others, no matter the raw packaging type).

    Good points about the number of “keepers”. I have 2 TLRs and I find that 12 shots is the perfect number. You don’t do as many grab shots as with 35. ( In fact with 35 intend to take 3 frames of each subject so that I still get a total of 12 images).

Even experienced photographers who print their own stuff, can’t tell it’s not from a film negative. I love 8x10 paper negative contact prints.

    nice to see the Technikardan out again, but also a tip, if it is a while since you used it, just do some dry practice runs, and also use a LOMOGRAFLOK back, with some instax square 800 that should get things moving, and the oil warm again, so things flow better. I've just got a sinar f2 with a Fujinon SWD 90 f 5.6 and SWD 65 f5.6 and am trying it out now, with the sinar vario back 6x12 on Kodak Gold 200 (~4 shots) to test everything, AS well as my new to me hand held sekonic meter; so here is hoping all goes well, but we all have to take the plunge into the abyss sometime, and when it works out well, we all wonder what all the fuss was for.

      Not exactly sure, to be honest. I have seen people putting up signs with a tub of glue that must have been around for hours. My guess is that it would last for a day? You can definitely use it after cooling. As long as it’s well mixed it won’t get lumpy until it dries out.

    Alastair, the reason the mirror can't auto return is the baffle system is separate, and connected, for the safety of the film, you have to cock the shutter, to wind the film, and place the baffle down to remove a lens, or back {saves the lens rear element or internals getting dust or moisture in it}.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 Месяц назад

    one more advantage to the battery 200 series, the DARKSLIDE also acts as a shutter lock, like the 500 series! BUT also prevents accidental metering system activation in your bag, or during transport, saving battery life.

Still shooting with the z8, still love the GFX 50sii more but the z8 does the job for many things.

    I was first motivated to try large format when I was visiting a local photographer and he put an 8x10 Kodachrome transparency on the light box. OMG, it was like touching a live wire. That was 30 years or so ago and I've never gotten over it. The irony is that my preference is for black and white. I can't remember the last time I shot color film. 😊

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird

      There was an essay that was written by a fellow (I can't quite remember his name) where he was in New York and he got a job with Irving Penn retouching his prints. At one point Mr. Penn called him into his office and on the Lightbox was the original 8x10 Kodachrome transparency for "After Dinner Games". There are few things in life as incredible as seeing a large format (I'll include 4x5 but really 8x10) transparency on a light table in a darkened room.

    I have resisted to get an 8x10 because I don't know what it should be good for. More resolution than 4x5? In my opinion not necessary, if you don't regularly print larger than 2m. You can also do the perspective correction tilt, shift and swing with the more reasonably priced and portable 4x5 camera.

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird Месяц назад

      You're absolutely right in all respects. The 4x5 is lighter, more reasonably priced and the resolution from 4x5 is more than adequate for every possible scenario. And yet the 8x10 called me. The rationale for shooting 8x10 is purely romantic. There isn't any reasonable benefit to 8x10 with the only possible exception of being able to easily do contact prints in the darkroom. But, I love the 8x10. It's really strange, when I process my film and pull out a sheet of 8x10, it feels, 'right'. When I shoot with the 8x10 4 or 5 frames is a good day's work. When I lug it around it's not too heavy... If you look at it clinically the 8x10 serves little purpose. And yet I really love it. I think the reason why comes down to the fact that it's so incredibly unforgiving that in order to get a decent image you really have to want it and, in many cases, fight for it. The work and the dedication pays off. Any sloppiness will show up immediately.
